How to Buy HTTP Proxies: HTTPS, CONNECT and Setup

How HTTP proxies carry HTTPS through CONNECT, what to check before you buy and how to configure one in curl, Python and Node. HTTP vs SOCKS5 covered.

To buy HTTP proxies, you need to know what you are paying for: an HTTP proxy accepts requests over the HTTP proxy protocol, and the same endpoint usually carries HTTPS traffic too by tunnelling it. The decisions that matter are the IP type behind the proxy, how you are billed, which authentication you need, and whether your tools need SOCKS5 instead. This guide explains how HTTP and HTTPS proxying actually works, what to check before you buy and how to configure the proxy in curl, Python and Node. BuyProxy sells HTTP and SOCKS5 proxies across six IP types.

What an HTTP Proxy Is

An HTTP proxy is a server that forwards HTTP requests on your behalf. For plain HTTP, your client sends the request to the proxy, which makes it to the destination and returns the response. MDN describes a proxy as an intermediary that may forward requests, serve them from a cache, or modify them, and notes that forward proxies act on behalf of clients.

The word "HTTP" describes the protocol your client speaks to the proxy, not necessarily the websites you can reach with it. That is why a single HTTP proxy endpoint can be used for HTTPS sites as well.

How HTTPS Works Through an HTTP Proxy

For HTTPS, your client asks the proxy to open a tunnel using the CONNECT method. According to MDN, CONNECT requests that a proxy establish an HTTP tunnel to a destination server, and once any 2xx response is returned the proxy blindly relays data in both directions until the tunnel closes. The request looks like this:

CONNECT example.com:443 HTTP/1.1
Host: example.com:443
Proxy-Authorization: Basic dXNlcjpwYXNz

After the tunnel opens, your client performs the TLS handshake with the destination directly, so the proxy relays encrypted bytes it cannot read. That is why a standard HTTP proxy can carry HTTPS safely, and why the proxy needs a port open for CONNECT, normally 443. If credentials are missing or wrong, the proxy answers 407 before opening the tunnel; see proxy error codes and fixes.

HTTP Proxy or SOCKS5?

HTTP proxies understand web traffic; SOCKS5 proxies relay arbitrary TCP connections without interpreting them. For browsers, scrapers and API clients, HTTP is usually the simplest choice. Choose SOCKS5 when your software expects it or when you need non-web traffic. Our guide to HTTP vs SOCKS5 proxies compares them in detail, and on BuyProxy you pick the protocol when you generate a line.

What to Check Before You Buy an HTTP Proxy

  1. The IP type. The protocol is the easy part; the IP behind it decides whether sites accept you. Residential and mobile IPs pass checks that block datacenter ranges. See which proxy type to buy.
  2. Billing. Per GB (BuyProxy) or per IP per month. Per GB suits rotating use and uneven traffic.
  3. Authentication. Username and password in the proxy URL, or an IP allowlist for tools that cannot send credentials.
  4. Rotation. A rotating endpoint changes IP per request, while sticky sessions hold one IP for a set time. BuyProxy sticky sessions default to 10 minutes and extend to 30.
  5. Targeting. Country, and city where you need it.
  6. Minimum purchase and credit expiry. You should be able to test for a few dollars, and unused bandwidth should not vanish. BuyProxy starts at $5 and credits never expire.

The step-by-step guide to buying a proxy server covers the full purchase process.

How to Configure an HTTP Proxy

A proxy URL has the form http://USERNAME:PASSWORD@HOST:PORT. Replace the placeholders with the line from your dashboard.

curl uses -x:

curl -x "http://USERNAME:PASSWORD@HOST:PORT" https://api.ipify.org

Python requests takes a proxies dictionary, per the requests documentation:

import requests

proxy = "http://USERNAME:PASSWORD@HOST:PORT"
proxies = {"http": proxy, "https": proxy}
print(requests.get("https://api.ipify.org", proxies=proxies, timeout=30).text)

Node.js can use undici's ProxyAgent:

import { ProxyAgent } from "undici";

const dispatcher = new ProxyAgent("http://USERNAME:PASSWORD@HOST:PORT");
const res = await fetch("https://api.ipify.org", { dispatcher });
console.log(await res.text());

In each case the response should show the proxy's IP address instead of yours. For browsers, Puppeteer and other tools, see the setup guide.

Troubleshooting a New HTTP Proxy

  • 407 Proxy Authentication Required: the username or password is wrong, or your client is sending credentials to the destination instead of the proxy. Test the same URL with curl first.
  • Connection refused or timed out: the host or port is wrong, or your network blocks outbound connections to that port.
  • Works for HTTP but fails for HTTPS: the proxy may not allow CONNECT to port 443, or your client is not configured to tunnel HTTPS through it.
  • 403 from the destination: the proxy works but the target dislikes the IP type; try a different tier.
  • Special characters in the password: percent-encode them in the proxy URL.

Our proxy error codes guide explains each response in more depth.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Where can I buy HTTP proxies?
From a proxy provider that sells HTTP and SOCKS5 proxies, such as BuyProxy. Look for published prices, a small minimum purchase and credits that do not expire.

Q: Can an HTTP proxy be used for HTTPS websites?
Yes. The client uses the CONNECT method to open a tunnel through the proxy, then performs TLS with the destination directly, so the proxy relays encrypted traffic it cannot read.

Q: What is the difference between an HTTP proxy and an HTTPS proxy?
Usually the labels describe how you connect to the proxy and what it carries. Most sellers use one endpoint that handles both plain HTTP requests and HTTPS tunnels. Check the seller's documentation for the exact ports.

Q: Do HTTP proxies hide my IP address?
They change the IP the destination sees to the proxy's IP. They do not encrypt your traffic by themselves, which is a key difference from a VPN; see proxy vs VPN.

Q: How much do HTTP proxies cost?
It depends on the IP type and billing. On BuyProxy, per-GB prices run from about $0.29/GB for IPv6 to $3.99/GB for mobile, with Core Residential at $0.99/GB.

Summary

An HTTP proxy forwards web requests and tunnels HTTPS through the CONNECT method, so one endpoint can serve most web work. When you buy, focus on the IP type behind it, the billing model, authentication and rotation, and test with a small purchase before you scale.
